Representatives from a coalition of 12 groups, a business owner, and two Wisconsin State Representatives met at the Mexican Consulate in Milwaukee to present a letter asking Mexico to co-sponsor a Uniting for Peace Resolution in the United Nations General Assembly. Uniting for Peace is a little known mechanism in the United Nations that can bypass the veto powers of the U.S. in the Security Council. If two thirds of the nations in the General Assembly vote for the resolution, a variety of actions can be taken to end the genocide happening in Gaza and the West Bank. The actions may include: Stripping Israel of its U.N. credentials, placing an arms embargo and other sanctions on Israel, and sending an international armed force to protect the Palestinians, guard the delivery of humanitarian aide and gather evidence of war crimes.
Edgar Rebollar Saenz, Consul of Community Affairs graciously received the letter and materials brought by the group. He promised to forward the materials to the Mexican Embassy in Washington D.C. and to the Mexican delegation at the United Nations in New York City.
This hastily assembled project was born from the webinars put together by Dr. Jill Stein and the associated website lifelineforpalestine.com. The GMGP relayed the information to Peace Action Wisconsin which held an emergency meeting on September 13th and invited all groups interested in actions to stop the genocide in Gaza. This action came from the UN working group. There will be other actions to follow.
