As the world celebrates the last week of Pride month, the Greater Milwaukee Green Party (GMGP), a longtime supporter of LGBTQIA rights, acknowledges that progress has been made in the fight for diversity and equality, but there is still much work to be done.
We believe LGBT people deserve equal rights, and that all people deserve a basic standard of living. Those who have been marginalized in the past have the most to gain as we fight for all people’s rights. Besides fighting for the right for all to drink clean water, access nutritious food, live in safe housing, access medical care options, and live in peace in a clean environment, our platform calls specifically for LGBT equality.
Enshrining the Marriage Equality Act into state law is an important way to protect the rights LGBT Americans have gained.
The GMGP believes there is strength in diversity and that the health and well-being of all individuals, regardless of sex, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity, characteristics and expression (per our platform) and our environment should be the focus of political debate and cooperation.
What can still be done? The GMGP is small, but we are mighty! We played a primary role in collecting over 1300 signatures to get our candidate, Chester Todd, on the November ballot for the first congressional district. We look forward to continue working with our LGBT brothers and sisters in petitioning, educating voters on issues (hosting live speakers or documentary films), proposing legislation, then seeking support in our state legislature.
We celebrate and stand with the LGBTQIA community in solidarity. Please join us to do more than paint rainbows in June. Together we can build a Green Milwaukee that stands for human rights every day.
